This is a genuine in-house Legal Counsel opportunity focused on the front end of the deal, the point where risk is allocated and value is won or lost. You'll review tenders and Head Contracts, negotiate directly with Principals, and shape the contractual foundations of some of Australia's most significant defence, marine, resources and infrastructure projects before a single weld is laid. Working alongside our Head of Legal, you'll be mentored by senior legal leadership and have direct exposure to management and executives from day one, with a clear pathway to grow into a senior legal role. The position is full-time, based at our Corporate Offices in Henderson.

The Role
- Review tender documentation and Head Contracts, identify contractual and commercial risks, and issue commercial clarifications.
- Draft, review and negotiate contracts and legal documentation in support of tenders and new projects.
- Conduct and coordinate commercial and legal negotiations with Principals and contractors.
- Draft strategic pre-contracts agreements.
- Prepare and manage securities and insurances in accordance with contractual requirements and company policies.
- Provide advice and input to the internal estimating team on insurance and tender risks and the pricing thereof.
- Provide advice on contracting and contractual risk allocation across the tender and pre-contracts process.
- Identify, brief and instruct specialist external legal counsel as required.
- Support the Head of Legal in providing legal advice to management and executives on contractual issues.
- Liaise with procurement, risk management and audit personnel across the business.
About You
To be successful in the role, you will possess the following:
- Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and admission as a legal practitioner in Australia.
- A minimum of 2 years' post-admission experience in private practice or in-house.
- Great attention to detail and an ability to see beyond the written contract risks.
- Experience in Australian construction law, ideally with front-end / transactional exposure.
- A sound understanding of construction contracting models and risk allocation.
- Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills.
- Commercial acumen and the ability to communicate risk clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
- Experience in the heavy engineering, construction, resources or defence sectors (highly regarded).
