Civmec’s Balanced Machines Division is expanding rapidly, with multiple projects awarded and a strong pipeline ahead. These machines are designed, fabricated, assembled, and tested at our state-of-the-art Henderson facility, and you’ll play a key role in bringing them to life.
Civmec is seeking a Senior Functional Safety Engineer to play a critical role in designing and implementing safety instrumented systems for balanced machines. You’ll lead the development and refinement of functional safety management plans, verification and validation processes, and design guidelines across Civmec and project-specific frameworks.

The Role
As the Senior Functional Safety Engineer, you will lead the functional safety lifecycle across new and existing machinery projects. Your role includes ensuring that all safety‑related control systems meet the requirements of AS/NZS 61508, AS/NZS62061, AS/NZS 4024, ISO 13849, and other key standards.
You will be the technical authority on functional safety, guiding design teams, facilitating risk assessments, ensuring compliance, and supporting commissioning and validation activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide functional safety expertise on multi-disciplinary balanced machine projects,
- Prepare and/ or maintain Civmec Balanced Machine Functional Safety Management Plan;
- Develop and deliver customised project Functional Safety Management Plan;
- Collaborate with clients, and engineering teams to embed functional safety principles into the design and delivery of instrumented safety systems;
- Prepare functional safety related documents and deliverable including management plans, hazard and risk assessments, Safety Requirement Specifications, Safety hardware specification, verification and validation reports, Functional Safety Assessment report and other key deliverables;
- Perform Functional Safety Audit and Validation activities;
- Facilitate and lead client workshops, including hazard identification and HAZOP, risk assessments, and LOPA;
- Develop maintenance and proof test procedures aligned with safety integrity requirements;
- Implement and use the Company tools and application to efficiently delivering the functional safety design and documents;
- Communicate effectively with all project teams;
- Manage functional safety deliverables in line with schedule and budget requirements;
- Train and coach less experienced personnel.
About You
To be successful in the role you will possess the following:
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechatronics, or Safety Engineering
- TÜV/ Exida Functional Safety Engineer / Professional certification (Mandatory)
- CPEng (Chartered Professional Engineer) or NER (National Engineer Register) qualification is desirable.
Experience
- 7–10+ years’ experience in functional safety engineering
- Proven background applying AS/NZS 61508, IEC 62061, AS/NZS 4024 and ISO 13849
- Proven background of developing the Safety requirement specified, hardware design specifications
- Strong experience with SIL/PL analysis, and safety verification
- Experience in mining, heavy industry, automation, or similar environments
- Experience with Balanced Machine (Stacker, Reclaimer or Ship loader) control system design or instrumentation desirable
Skills
- Strong understanding of safety‑related control systems and risk reduction measures
- Experience with Isograph Reliability Block Diagram software
- Ability to communicate confidently with internal teams, clients, auditors and stakeholders
- A proactive mindset with a passion for excellence, problem solving, and collaboration
